Memorial Day Traveler Alert

Computer Viruses Increase During Long Weekends
Homeowners & Businesses Advised to Update Anti-virus Software upon Return

MERRIMAC, Mass. -- Holiday travelers should be on alert upon arriving home from Memorial Day weekend. ?Holidays are a popular time for computer viruses to spread,? said Harold M. Belbin, principal security engineer for Visiting Geeks, a Merrimac-based on site computer repair, networking and security company serving residences and small businesses north of Boston.

?Most computer users have a tendency to turn off their computers when away on extended trips, which means they?re not getting newly-released anti-virus patches or anti-spyware updates,? said Belbin. Viruses and spyware are the two most common areas that cause computer problems. Belbin recommends computer users update anti-virus and anti-spyware scans before opening e-mail or going online after an extended absence.

?We?ve consistently seen an increase in call volume for virus related problems immediately following long weekends,? said Belbin. ?It?s an easy problem to fix. Just update all your security software before using your computer.? For those who forget, Visiting Geeks will have extra technicians on hand to manage the overflow immediately after Memorial Day.
